KNIFE BRIDE Deliver Crushing Intent With “smother (make me suffer)”

KNIFE BRIDE hail from Brighton, UK and are on course to become your new favorite band. Sitting somewhere between gripping fantasy and vital reality, their sound is one that celebrates and uplifts powerful women. Proud as can be and poised to rip and tear at you as they see fit, they blend crushing metal and harmonious pop like it is second nature. And they have a new EP coming out next month. It’s called don’t dream too much and will be released on August 25. Vocalist Mollie Buckley describes it as, “A trilogy of my gruesome dreams. A one-night cycle of disturbing visions”. And you only have to listen to their new track to see why.

That song is “smother (make me suffer)”. A crushing, razor-sharp piece of nu-metal-drenched intensity, littered with gothic undertones, it’s a proper head masher. Though below the surface, it pokes fun at the male gaze, speaking about the hope that even after death there is still something good to look at.

Mollie explains further with tongue planted firmly in cheek:

“This is the flickery eye, heart racing, electric pulsing part of falling into sleep. I wanted to incorporate the word ‘smother’ into a song ever since being obsessed with the song ‘smother me’ by The Used from the age of 14 – the lyrical content is actually inspired as a response to this song. ‘smother (make me suffer)’ attempts to ‘poke fun’ at the male gaze.

“The chorus does this by saying “hope I stay fresh for you”, alluding to hoping my corpse is still beautiful, clean, and looking/smelling good – satirically commenting on being a subservient female and letting a man have his cake and eat it.”
